"Glen Iris pound out brawny, scalding, guitar-dominated rock that sounds concurrently blunt, brazen and invigorating. In the late 80s and early 90s, we saw the rise of grunge, symbolically if not thoroughly centered in the Pacific Northwest, while during the same era there were other bands with similar influences (punk, 70s metal, SST, Thurston Moore) emerging with a more brutish fist-punch take on it, symbolically if not thoroughly centered in the Midwest. Not to suggest they're speedfreaks or anything of the sort, but Glen Iris would've fit in well among AmRep's finest. Their album, Round and Round (via Moodswing Records) is a solid 40-minute jolt that occasionally dazzles." — Stomp and Stammer
Dead Stars was formed in 2009 by Jeff Moore (guitar, vocals), his cousin Jaye Moore (drums) and John Watterberg (bass). This Brooklyn, NY three piece came together to create their own brand of indie pop, with fuzzed out guitars, hook laden riffs and melodic sensibilities. During the first few years the band self released three EP’s before gaining the attention of local label Uninhabitable Mansions, who released 2013's five song 'High Gain’ EP. Building on the positive response of the record, Dead Stars went back into the studio to record their first full length ‘Slumber’. After hearing the album, the band was signed by Old Flame Records who will be releasing the record in June of 2014.
Sharkmuffin's name fits. The Brooklyn all female 3-piece outfit crafts adorable pop music with jagged, garage-aged fangs. With lyrical subjects including incest, mythical bestiality, and homicidal heroin using femebots, Thiessen's gutsy vocals jump between gentle moans to rough, forceful screams. They melt into Janet LaBelle's crashing cymbals and Natalie Kirch's thudding bass in a harmonious union. Admiration for 90s alternative girl group-esquehooks are paired with heavy 1970s inspired guitar riffs to create the raw sound of these punk rocking debutants. With these guys, it's no secret the end goal is fun. Sharkmuffin doesn't really give a fuck, they just want to have a good time.
Blue Tower is a a punk, rock n' roll band out of West End, Atlanta.
